Finance and Insurance

"If you're interested in working with money, you will want to investigate opportunities in the Finance and Insurance industry. This industry covers establishments that facilitate the movement of money through financial transactions. The establishments are typically involved in some type of banking, insurance, or securities and commodities exchange.

Many establishments in this sector are part of the banking system. Common types of banking establishments include commercial banks, savings institutions, and credit unions. Commercial banks operate at the global, regional, or community levels, while savings institutions and credit unions typically operate at smaller regional or community levels.

Although many establishments in the credit intermediation sector are banks, there are also non-banking establishments involved in issuing credit and financing. These include loan agencies, finance leasing companies, check cashing services, and others.

The insurance sector offers protection against financial losses. Individuals and businesses purchase insurance policies that offer reimbursements in the case of events such as medical emergencies, theft, fire, natural disasters, and accidents. Insurance establishments collect funds by charging customers for the policies. They then assume the financial risk of these disasters. They invest the money to generate revenue, using some of the profits to pay the insurance claims of policyholders.

A third area of the industry deals with the exchange of financial instruments (securities) and commodities. Establishments in this sector include investment banks that help companies issue and sell bonds and stocks, securities and commodities exchanges or brokerage firms that bring together buyers and sellers for trading, and banks or financial services establishments that provide investment advice and manage investments.
