Retail Trade

Retail Trade

"Did you buy anything today? Groceries? Toothpaste? A book? A computer? A car?! Whatever it was, you likely shopped at an establishment in the Retail Trade industry. These establishments sell a wide variety of goods directly to consumers.

In the distribution chain for merchandise, retail establishments are the final step before customer purchase. Retailers purchase goods from establishments in other industries, such as manufacturing, agriculture, or wholesale trade, and then sell them in small quantities to the public. Retail establishments are not usually involved in any transformation of the goods; the merchandise that they purchase is ready for sale.

Most establishments in this sector are known as store retailers. These businesses are designed to attract walk-in customers who view and purchase products directly. Customers can also purchase retail goods from non-store retailers. These establishments sell goods to the public through alternative retailing methods. This may be on television via infomercials, through the mail via catalogs, in-person by door-to-door solicitation or in-home demonstrations, or through other means such as portable stalls and vending machines. The fastest growing method of non-store retailing is online, using websites or online auctions.

While this sector is primarily engaged in selling merchandise, some establishments also offer after-sale services for their products, such as repair and installation. The goods serviced are usually for personal or household use, although some establishments serve businesses or institutions."  ~Career Cruising database
