"The Public Administration industry covers agencies involved in administering, overseeing, and managing government programs and activities, due to executive, legislative, or judicial authority. Government activities in this industry include:

• Setting policies
• Creating and interpreting laws
• Adjudicating civil and criminal legal cases
• Collecting taxes
• Representing US interests abroad
• Ensuring public order and safety
• Providing for national defense and homeland security

 

The Public Administration sector does not include all establishments that are owned or controlled by government; some government-provided goods and services are classified in other sectors. Public Administration only covers establishments engaged in activities that are not also done by private establishments. Government-owned establishments engaged in activities that are also performed by the private sector are grouped with those private sector establishments."  ~Career Cruising database
